Engineered to feel light, fast and stable

The 2016 Severne Turbo delivers cam sail performance in a lightweight, user-friendly package. The 2 roller cams stabilise the foil and provide pre-set shaping for power and drive through gusts and lulls.

The design focus was on expanding wind range and improving comfort and control. The Turbo utilises the latest leech twist pattern from our race sail program with decreased head tension to allow the sail to auto-correct for variations in wind strength. Combined with a higher aspect ratio, this results in a much lighter feel. The lower clew increases control and stability.

SpiderFibre Race

SpiderFibre on the leech of the sail massively increases the perimeter strength and inhibits vertical stretch between the sail panels.

Thermoformed headpatch

Protects the adjustment webbing and head assembly stitching from wear during rigging, carrying and launching.

Seamless head panel

This high abrasion area is made from only 1 panel and does not carry any exposed seams, preventing any potential weak point in this area. As a result, seam creep and seam-related failure have been eliminated.

Stabilisor Panel

A key component in stabilising the leading edge, the STABILIZOR PANEL is a panel of thicker 188 Monofilm. This material has minimal stretch in all directions and enables the high skin tension to create a very rigid profile for instant acceleration and maximum wind range.

Another benefit of the low stretch properties of 188 Monofilm is that the designed sail shape is maintained for longer as there is less long term stretch. This is pretty important as there are high downhaul loads which can cause most race sails to lose their original shape quickly.

Boom height reference

Boom height gauge for ease of reference.

Internal printed x-ply

Printing the films prior to lamination with the x-ply gives us the flexibility to use multi-coloured, custom graphics. The print is of minimal thickness, reducing weight and producing a higher definition of colour. During lamination the printed side is placed on the inside of the film so there is no need to worry about wear. Your sails will forever remain looking bright and fresh.

Seamless foot construction

A single panel in the foot area with hidden load patches and zero exposed stitching eliminates seam abrasion and seam creep in this high load area. Maximum durability and minimum weight.

3&4 roller tack pulley

Roller tack pulleys are matched to the sails downhaul requirements and aligned for friction free downhauling and threading ease. Rig your sails with the Severne Hardware Division extensions for function and simplicity.

RDM Cam conversion

The RDM Cam is an aftermarket option that converts the Turbo and OverDrive for use on a RDM mast. This option increases the access to the sail as many speed converts may already have a RDM mast. Speed sailors may prefer the extra level of mast reliability that the RDM mast gives you.

(The Turbo and OverDrive is supplied with SDM cams in all sizes)

Dropped Clew

The Dropped Clew allows for the reduction of boom and luff lengths; reducing the swing weight, increasing stability and promoting manoeuvrability.

Thermoformed tack fairing

Protects your board from impact and neatly covers the foot detailing. It incorporates the rope stash pocket for easy storage of your downhaul rope.

Molded soft edge

With recessed grooving, covering any vulnerable stitching the moulded soft edge encloses the hard edge long the foot of the sail and protects the stitching from wear along the board non-skid.

2 reviews for Severne Turbo 2016

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

Now used my new 8.6 m2 2016 Turbo on six different days in winds varying from 7kt light winds on a longboard to stronger winds with gusts approaching 30kt on a short board. I’m extremely happy with this sail and also glad I paired it with a new Severne mast (75% SDM was tempted to save a bit of money with a third-party mast but think the sail might have rigged less-than-perfectly and you never know whether the cams will rotate cleanly or stay on if the bend curve is off the luff spec).

The sail is very light in the hands in all conditions – lighter wind gybes are effortless for a largish sail. Power delivery is really smooth even in big gusts (I sail predominantly at Farmoor reservoir in Oxfordshire – routinely gusty); you feel the power building via the boom and have enough time to shift weight to use all the power without losing control – very tactile. Upwind performance is superb. On the longboard I can beat really close to the wind and still maintain good momentum.

In lighter winds I need to give the sail quite a heavy pump to rotate the cams when tacking (I’ve not used the sail often enough to really try out lots of different outhaul and downhaul settings and see if this improves rotation – I’m downhauling enough to get three loose leech panels) but other than that this sail has been a joy to use and I’m really glad I chose the Turbo. Would have marginally preferred blue to orange but there just weren’t any around and no signs there would be any (ever?).

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

A twin cam sail that feels fast, light and stable. The perfect sail to enter the world of going fast. Easier to rig than the Overdrive and Reflex.

The 2 roller cams stabilise the foil shape giving it power and drive though gusts and lulls. Its design focus was for improved comfort and control across a greater range of wind conditions giving it a light weight feel along with stability and control.

I have used this sail range for race events and just blasting along on sunny days. A great sail to use on all days!

If you want a fast sail the Turbo is your choice, but if are looking for a rig under 7m, I would also look at the Unit. Available from 5.5m to 9.2m.
