Severneshop Team Riders are renowned for their commitment to charity events and doing what we can for others when we can do it. For 2018 Jonny ‘Flaka’ Gambell has thrown down the gauntlet and proposed to Windsurf The Wash for the RNLI – the very people who probably have to rescue us!. Jonny is doing it as a part of his college course and has asked the Severneshop Team to sail with him from Hunstanton to Skegness and possibly back again. The 14.7 mile stretch of water may look easy enough but with sand bars across it the water state can change in to reef style wave sets at any time. Its not for faint hearted and we will supported by 2 RIB’s with First Aid and spare kit.

Riders Neil Greentree, Steve Chatten, Andy Holland will be escorting Jonny with John Fox and Penny Wiles coming along for the ride. Its date is fluid to get the right wind in the right direction but will be completed within the first 6 months of 2018. Sadly this event is not open to all for safety reasons but it will for sure test the nerve of the riders both physically and mentally.

Jonny has set up a Just Giving webpage to allow people to donate to this great cause – you can find it Here

Neil Greentree ” about 15 years ago as I was learning windsurfing I was sailing at Wells and there’s a sand bar which creates waves over it. I was only an intermediate sailor at that time and I as I sailed over the back of wave (don’t ask!) and scooted straight down the face of the wave the board STOPPED DEAD and I crashed over the handlebars followed by the wave face. I broke 3 ribs and we were concerned I had punctured a lung so the RNLI were called. They got the RIB through the wave breaks and grabbed me on board to my relief – you never know when you will need them and they were great that day. Once in they didn’t judge me or comment, they just said we had done the right thing.I later visited them with Whiskey and Donuts as a thankyou.

It would only need for all our Revolutionaires to donate £1……. yes £1……. for us to raise £5000.00 for the RNLI. We are lucky enough to have a rescue service as good as the RNLI so if you have short arms and deep pockets……… reach a little further…its only a quid!!!

Donate Here – Thankyou!

Thankyou

If we get enough interest in the event we may run a Windsurf The Wash event for a limited number of entrants. There will be a cost involved circa (£100) to cover rescue boats etc but you need to insure yourself as we will not have cover in place. If you are interested comment on this page.

  • Nice one guys, but…….I want to do it !!!!!!!!

  • Yes count me in I’ve got my starboard race

  • Hi Severn team – did this happen? I sail at Skegness and have thought about doing Skegness to Hunstanton and back – just waiting for the right circumstances – check out my Facebook Page “surflincs”. Let me know when it is happening as I would like to join – thanks

    • Hiya – yeah it happened. Jonny Gambell and Penny Wiles completed the journey in 2 hrs. Neil had to retire as his board was too small for the light winds and John Fox had to retire due to going too far downwind. Well done to Jonny for completed the run and raising £700 for the RNLI
